About Web 3.0
http://convictionsandfreethoughts.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/web-3-0/

It is good that Web 3.0 focuses more on improving the effectiveness of how one searches through the internet. Although Web 3.0 lacks in some aspects like scalability and interaction, I believe this is just alright because these are the primary focus in the current Web 2.0 era. This just means that Web 3.0 may be the key to a better surfing world. It won't be just for academics anymore -- people will be able to use the tools they find most useful. No one can really tell what awaits for us in Web 3.0, but I am hoping to be there when the change happens.

Article: "Social Media and Education"

Social media meets Education

I greatly believe that we should maximize the capacities of social media to improve learning and teaching. This term, I’m lucky enough to be part of Social Education class which tackles the power of social media to boost students’ learning experience as well as instructors’ teaching experience. Of course, this fusion would not be a success if we don’t take into consideration the fundamental foundation or the underlying theories that supports this kind of merging between education and social media. Everyone now is connected through this new innovation and as an instructional designer it is my duty to explore its potentials in connecting people to education. Education for all, indeed.

Social Media and Education
When I read this I was a bit surprised and happy to know, even if I am a student in Instructional Design. I was motivated into changing and also improving the educational system and learning process. I have already undergone through these processes but sometimes I do not know if what I did were that useful to be honest. I saw my classmates’ designs and was amazed in what they can do. I wanted my works to be that interactive and eye-catching; I tried my best and did what I can. When I showed my work to my friends they were amazed and want to go through the whole program. For me it was no different when I used it but from their experience it seems amazing. It may be me that was downgrading my work but after reading this post I remembered that the main importance is the users and their reaction to the program.
Fancy graphics and interactive controls are useless in learning without the main important component: The content. The point in improving the learning system and education is to use the content but with the help of multimedia. We have already seen many times that media can catch the attention of many users and how effective it is if it used in a more appropriate form. People can easily remember and understand more through audio and visual aid. Through this course in DLSU, we can do the task in improving the Learning System.

From the definition given, Open Teaching sounds like it is what we exactly need to suffice for today’s learners. By definition, “Open teaching is described as the facilitation of learning experiences that are open, transparent, collaborative, and social.” (Courios, 2010, p. 115) and from the blog, the idea is to carry about this teaching style through the use of the technologies that we have today: Social Media and Computing.

Today’s learners have all the resources made accessible to them through the internet, and that has affected their mindset that they are very capable to learn on their own. However, with that thought also came the scepticism that teachers have become inefficient due to the idea that the learners are not being motivated enough or simply do not think that what the teachers teach them is what they need as well as “Why need to listen to the lecture or attend class when I can learn this from the internet” thoughts. Now, if we are to tackle today’s learners, we won’t be able to make them learn through the classic spoonfeeding technique. They have become capable therefore we must treat them as such. They must be able to exercise their capabilities through action. They must be able to participate and feel for themselves with the teacher as a guide. And this is what we can most certainly do through Social Media and Open Teaching.

Imagine a classroom where not only the teacher is talking, but the students as well. Students easily get bored and when they do, learning will not take place. If they talk, discuss, argue, and debate their standpoints, they will be given learning experiences that caters to their immense needs to act on their curiosities, feel the learning process, and see the relevance of this in their lives. Now, social media has also made this even more accessible. E-classrooms have also become popular nowadays and I think that employing a forum-like thread for certain topics can become an application of Open Teaching/Learning. Threads like those in the forums are usually venues for interactions, conversations, and arguments and in my personal opinion, nothing says social and collaborative learning experience better than these healthy interactions.

Through Open Teaching, students are not alienated from what they are learning. They become more interested in the lessons by the freedom and ability given to them to voice out their opinions to others and at the same time, learn from the experiences. They are able to voice out their views, sometimes defend them, and get exposed to those of others. Basically, they learn not only from the books or the articles, they also learn from each other. The teacher, then, must be the one to facilitate the openness of this learning style. The controlling, guiding, and facilitating skills that he has should be the driving force of the learning experiences. He is still the most powerful stimuli of the process, however, this has not made him too far out to reach for the students as he is now part of the learning experience that they have and not merely viewed from afar.

Re-imagining the 21st century graduate: I think that based on the current and growing technologies it's time to re-create the academic curriculum and make it based more on the current technological advancements available

Bringing teachers’ digital literacy to a competency level: Just like students teachers need to be in the know, being technologically competent to be able to teach more effectively and capture student's attentions easily.

Open teaching first then open learning: you need to be open to teaching, because if you don't want to accept teachings then how can you accept learnings?

Social media and education: Using social media as a way to get information and also to pass information is a great way to use and utilize technology
