a. Facebook is social and participative because it lets people talk and interact with each other through the features that they have.
1. Instant messaging
2. Posting on their friend's "wall"
3. Liking a picture/status.
4. Commenting on pictures/statuses.
5. Playing games with your friends

Facebook is evolving because it adds more features so that people could easily interact with their friends.

b. Technology and new media can help students or people share and learn new information about a wide range of topics online. People would also have more access to these information then they do before. New technologies and media can be either constructive, distracting, or liberating, depending on how the person uses it.

c. Yes. With a lot of emerging technologies, not all of them are utilized properly because the users get bored easily. Content nowadays should be more interactive or have a better layout so it can be utilized better.

A. Facebook help us keep in touch with our friends by enabling us to upload our photos, comment on each other's posts, share as well as like them. These are the main factors why it can be considered as social and participatory. Our group believes that Facebook itself is evolving, because it continues to improve its features and cater to the needs of its users even by just simply updating its interface.

B. We believe that the technology and new media present now are both constructive and distracting. Constructive in the sense that it paves the way for easier researches and quantifies the number of resources available within one student's reach. One major disadvantage though is that these technologies can be a distraction to the students, because of some certain features that wards off students. (Checking their social networking sites, streaming videos and tv series, etc.)

C. We do believe that there should be more emphasis on the employment of social learning models now in the higher education. These could be of a big help, especially in simulating lessons that are hard to understand with words. Funds should be prepared by each educational school to be able to fully grasp the utilization of social learning models. With this, instructional designers can assess the problems in each school's curriculum and build coursewares, teachwares, and other learning models to solve those teaching problems.

Additional answer on letter C:

Since people learn from their environment, it is very important to know what are the factors that affect the learners. And knowing these factors can change how people learn. Like in a simple grade school classroom, knowing what to put in that room will affect how the students will learn; putting creative billboards, or other stuff that will make the students more interested in learning and will drive them to participate more rather than just having a plain, simple, classroom which will probably make the students sleepy or bored. Another strategy would be maximizing the use of social media such as twitter, facebook, tumblr, etc. and through the use of infographics for the students's convenience, since these resources are easy to access.

a. Analyze the sociability characteristics of Facebook. What makes it social and participatory? Describe and give at least 5 examples. Do you perceive the social interactions in Facebook as evolving? What makes it evolving or what makes it not evolving?

1. Facebook has an online chat feature within the site that lets the users communicate with their friends at ease without the need to download and install third party applications
2. Facebook has a group feature that lets a certain group of people with common interests or for educational purposes share their thoughts, post files as well as socialize with each other.
3. Facebook has features such as timeline which lets its users and his or her friends see the important moments in his/her life.
4. Facebook enables their user to create polls. It allows the user and others to see how people response to a certain question done by the user by looking at the top answers they choose.
5. Facebook also embedded some popular games in their website. Games such as “Tetris Battle” allow two facebook users to play and communicate live while playing.
6. Facebook is like a one stop shop in the web where users can socialize with people and organize his/her life. With facebook you will now know when a friend celebrates his or her birthday as well as greet him all within one site. It is the convenience of facebook that attracts so many users.
b. The emerging technologies made its way to converge or co-exist with media --as a content like text or words, image/photo or audio; and as a medium like blog, livestream, Youtube, open document, Flickr and others. How do you see now technology and new media converging or co-existing making an impact to students' personal and academic lives? Is this constructive, distracting, liberating? Please explain.
It made the lives of every student more convenient. Finding an answer to their problems is made easy like when you have a problem in learning C programming language, you can browse “Google” for a simple text based tutorial or even go to “Youtube” for a more fitting video tutorial.

It is also sometimes distracting to us student because of the emergence of online gaming. It made some people addicted to it thus making them unproductive in their studies.

We concur to the idea that there should be more emphasis on the employment of social learning models in the higher education. This is for the reason that the audience such as teachers and students are very adaptive to the demand that is needed from them. Making these models a mandatory structure for learning would break barriers such as complaints in not knowing on how to engage in such technologies and reap the benefits of using these systems.

In deploying such a system, we suggest that familiar social spaces should be used before making users accustomed to more complex systems. An example of this would be allowing teachers to utilize the file sharing system of yahoo groups. If the teacher finds this workspace convenient, the teacher can now move on in using a much transformed system such as sites.google.com or dropbox in sharing files.

Moreover in using social learning models as an environment, we think that it would be nice if there is an openness in the learning strategies that will be engaged by teachers and students. Collaborative or peer learning as well as learning as an individual should be entertained.

A) One point that makes Facebook social would be being able to see your friends’ friends. You could ‘add as friend’ your friends’ friend even without knowing them personally and it would just depend on that person to confirm your friendship.
As participatory, you are able to talk with other people, who are complete strangers, but having the same likes or dislikes. Without adding new friends, you can talk and message people.
Whenever you update your status, especially relationship status, people are free to comment on it and say whether they like it or not. Sometimes other people who are not our friends could also comment and like your post if it was shared by your friends or made public. This is also a way of voluntarily participating.
You can create groups wherein you can immediately see who are online to chat with, make documents, albums, and other materials that you would like to share to the group. You could also immediately make discussions depending on the subject of the group.
You could also promote yourself in Facebook. When you make art work, song, stories or anything under the sun, you can immediately post it online and you can immediately get feedback to your work because people will voluntarily listen or look at your post especially if it in their top news feed.
Social Interaction is still evolving in Facebook because they are constantly making new features that their users use for social purposes. One great advantage of Facebook would be having so many users. It is advantageous because people who don’t use FB would be forced to make one because all their classmates, friends, colleagues are on facebook and that is where they post announcements, discussions, and alike.

B) Trends in Web 3.0 technology and social collaboration have paved way to a more group-centred technology-driven learning. Thus, on the question of how it affects students is the fact that many of our learners now, as pointed out, are millenial and have grown accustomed to the technologies that have been brought to them. As such, more collaborative measures have been placed to provide them a constructive academic environment. On the other hand, abusive uses of these sets of technologies can output into a more destructive and liberitarian usage of the technology which gives its disadvantages more pronounced effects. Thus, it is best to look at the point of view and perspective of how the technology is used and maximized.

C) With social media and technologies being slowly adapted by higher education institutions in the country, we find a must to continue adapting this methodologies and learning models to best give them the edge in learning. Using this models, the best strategy is to come up with a more integrated environment (social space) for academic purposes were the entire academe (students and professors) are able to collaborate on a more centralized basis. This strategy will enable social spaces highly suited for the learning scenarios and a great aid in collaborative works and group schematic building.

Web 3.0 Discussion

A. Analyze the sociability characteristics of Facebook. What makes it social and participatory? Describe and give at least 5 examples. Do you perceive the social interactions in Facebook as evolving? What makes it evolving or what makes it not evolving?

Facebook's social characteristics is that it focuses on each individual and one's ability to participate in another's space. Participation in facebook no longer requires permission unless one's account is private, one can simply comment in another's page and move on to the next. One can comment on a complete stranger's photos and even have conversations with them. 5 examples would be facebook's timeline, like button, comments in almost everything, group pages and fan pages.Facebook is now also widely used and most smart phones today have facebook as an app which makes it easy to access anytime anywhere. Social interactions in facebook are evolving, apart from previous direct messaging or one-one chats/talks, facebook now has group chat of everyone involved in a particular group.

B. The emerging technologies made its way to converge or co-exist with media --as a content like text or words, image/photo or audio; and as a medium like blog, livestream, Youtube, open document, Flickr and others. How do you see now technology and new mediaconverging or co-existing making an impact to students' personal and academic lives? Is this constructive, distracting, liberating? Please explain.

The emerging technologies, in a nutshell, mold and expand the way users share information. We believe that this directly impacts students' lives in a liberating manner. It is liberating in the sense that students are given the ability to share their thoughts and ideas through any medium they feel comfortable in. We are all familiar with the term "multiple intelligences", and this new mediaconverging opens up several possibilities in that field. Be it the visual students who are more at ease expressing themselves through photography, or the performers who enjoy sharing their ideas through videos, the 21st century learner is no longer restricted by the static text the internet used to be. Learning starts with sharing ideas and thoughts, and new technology caters directy to this.

C. As instructional designers, do you think there should be more emphasis on the employment of social learning models now in the higher education? If yes, how do you suggest going through it? What should be the strategies? If no, what is your alternative learning model? If you are to use the older models, explain how to go through it given a Web 3.0 environment and active social spaces surrounding our higher education students.

There should definitely be an emphasis in the social learning models today. As we have discussed in class as well as our experiences ourselves as students, we can say that we are in the age where every resource has been made available for learning, inviting a more self-sufficient style through Web 3.0. Therefore, as a proper supplement for the students, the teachers/instructors must act as guides to properly accomodate the students in what they should seek as well as use the tools present right now in efficient and effective manners. Collaborative efforts in learning (cooperative learning) is an example of a teaching style given more accessibility and ease in today's age. Social media like Facebook, Forums, etc. have enabled open discussions that can be viewed by people both as participants and audiences. This is a very effective way of social learning because learners are given the ability to talk amongst themselves, being exposed to different views and stands while also sharing and, at times, defending their own. The teacher/instructor must be the one to initiate, motivate, and also facilitate these discussions so as to ensure that the learning experience is a worthwhile and organized one.

- Facebook allows its users to interact to each other through various ways. People can comment on one’s status or press the like button as means of saying thumbs up online.
- Facebook also has FB Chat similar to Yahoo Messenger wherein users can send instant message. To add to that the developers also added video call wherein users can see face-to-face virtually his or her friends.
- Facebook also has a feature wherein users can form group for easier communication and collaboration. Facebook group is now an effective tool for important announcements, online submission of requirements, and online collaboration of the students and the professor.
- People can now post invitations and invite friends online by creating an event in Facebook. Because of this, more friends become aware of the said event.
- Facebook offers a lot of applications ranging from games to educational tools which users find helpful and entertaining.
- And lastly, what makes Facebook social and participatory is its various features that connects users to everyone else.

Basilio, Alyssa Marie:
I personally think that Facebook interactions are evolving. When I first used Facebook, writing on the wall of a friend is the only thing you can do to connect with him/her. Now, there is already chat/video chat feature. Geo-tagging is also made available in Facebook. Through this feature, you are now informed where your friend currently is or where a certain photograph was taken.

Berbano, John Anthony:
Yes, Facebook interactions are evolving. What makes them evolving is that Facebook’s software developers always come up with new features that make learning, collaboration, and entertainment more fun and effective. Before, only Facebook chat, comment, & message were the only means of communication. Now we have group chats, video calls, etc. and these are essential for making interactions more convenient.

Tan, Jill Samantha:
Facebook is an all-in-one social networking site which caters the needs of young people like us as well as adults. It may be used as an online classroom as well in which you can have real-time chat with your teacher. Facebook now has Facebook group wherein it is used as an online classroom learning environment. Another feature is geotagging wherein a person can tag his or her friends and the location from which it was taken. Blogging can also be done in Facebook. More people can view and like your blog because you are connected to your friends. If a person is bored from looking into updates, he or she can play games. Facebook events are the best way to see upcoming events and to organize social gatherings. There are many more features of Facebook besides these. I think Facebook is evolving since it has never stopped from implementing innovative ideas.

Valenzuela, Jernianne Kaila:
Yes, I think Facebook underwent a lot of improvements for the past few years. From a simple social networking site that allows people to interact through comments and likes it has now evolved to a web that allows users to do business transactions, collaboration and more extensive social interactions.

B)
Basilio, Alyssa Marie:
Liberating. Ever since the emergence of blog, livestream, youtube and other web 2.0 sites people most especially students now has a venue to voice out their mind. Ordinary people can now post their opinion online for others to see as well as upload videos for the world to discover. People can now learn not only through experts’ intellectual minds but also through peers who have shared their own piece on the net.

Berbano, John Anthony:
When it comes to students’ academic lives, the co-existence of technology and new media is constructive. They make learning more effective because they incorporate multimedia and a wide range of information. However, when it comes to the students’ personal lives, it’s more on the distracting and liberating side. Technology and new media can be a distraction because students tend to get caught up with browsing different things online, and may pay little attention to their studies. It is also liberating because information can be accessed within seconds (even milliseconds), and students can take advantage of the abundant supply of information on the web.
Tan, Jill Samantha:
For me, emerging technologies are both constructive and distracting depending on the person. It is constructive since it helps us build our knowledge on things that are not thought in school. I also use this to research on things that I want to learn. However, this is also distracting since most of the people are getting addicted to using social networking sites, like Facebook, which lessens their time in doing their school assignments.

C)
Basilio, Alyssa Marie:
As an instructional designer, I highly believe that yes, social learning models should be integrated in higher education. It is the current trend of this generation. People nowadays tend to be social and connected. As an IST student, I suggest that instructors should take advantage of the power these technologies can bring. I suggest they should start online class discussions or better yet give assignments wherein students can maximize the use of the web. Teachers should employ social learning model by giving projects that will allow students to collaborate and learn online. They should let them research, discuss, etc.

Berbano, John Anthony:
Yes, there should be more emphasis on the employment of social learning models on higher education. Online conferences and video conferences are very useful tools in learning, especially when the participants come from different places. Teachers and students can take advantage of these tools because learning is more convenient, and still interactive. Other tools such as googledocs/typewithme are emerging technologies that are beginning to be a part of students’ academic life. These tools provide convenience, practicality, and effective learning.

Valenzuela, Jernianne Kaila:
I think there is a need to give emphasis on the employment of social learning models in the higher education. Social aspects need to be well integrated into the the program for it to be effective. One of the strategies is conducting online classes. Through this, students can explore another side of learning aside from the classroom setting. They can collaborate with their peers, research reading materials, and compose online commentaries all at the same time. Given that there are emerging technologies already available for learning, students nowadays become comfortable in using these because they can acquire knowledge at their own preferred pace. Integrating the social learning models in higher education let the student learn in an environment that they are comfortable in.

A.)

The idea of Facebook is social interaction with all the people through the web like for example; sometimes a person is curious about the life of the other person. Having the power like Facebook, people can easily know about that person without asking them personally.

Facebook has a lot of features such as adding friends and knowing what is going on with them, events, games, chatting and creating pages. As you add your friends, you will receive their update on their profiles. You will able to know where they went, who’s with them and you can also like their activity. Regarding the events, you don’t need to meet and tell the person for an event. People can share photos, videos, and links around Facebook, so they could participate what have been posted. The posted photos, videos, and links can be for educational purposes or personal purposes.

Some artists or bands have pages so that people would know their tours and activities. If you liked a certain page or fan page, you will know the activity of the artist or a band.

Social interaction has evolved in a way all people use Facebook not for personal use only but for education, news, and business. Another example of social interaction in Facebook is the chat. In there, one person can chat with another person in his/her friends list, which is quite convenient for communicating with other people from far places.

There are a lot of interactive games that Facebook created so that people can also talk while playing. Another good example is Tetris. In this game, two people can play with each other at the same time and challenge each other’s score. This promotes friendly competition and helps people become more competitive.
B.)
Technology and media affects students’ personal and academic lives both positively and negatively. For a student’s personal life, it can be constructive because he/she can share almost anything with friends like stories, current events, videos, photos, and the like. A good relationship can be developed since there is connectivity between people even if they are not seeing each other physically. However, it can also ruin relationships since media and technology can be used as a way to ruin a person’s reputation. Just post one rumor about a person on the internet and it can spread like wildfire. In academics, it can also be both distracting and liberating. Students get distracted when using these technologies and media because they offer entertainment. A lot of students use the examples of media given when they are bored and this leads to loss of attention to academics which will result to poor academic performance. Although, when media and technology is used properly, they can be used as an advantage for students today since it can help with their studies. Research is made easy through the internet because almost all information can be found there. In a way, they are liberated from the hassles of going to libraries and conducting research manually since there is a huge storage of information made available to them that is free and easy to access.
C.)
The emerging technology has a big impact in the education. From its traditional way of teaching, it is now changing the learning strategy in the classroom because of the emerging technology around us. As instructional designers, we believe that there should be more emphasis on the employment of social learning models in higher education since it can help students learn from their peers. By letting students engage with group activities, they can share their opinions with other students and at the same time gain new knowledge by listening to the opinions of the other students.
