What is the impact of participatory culture? are there any dangers?
-One danger we see is the overload of information or such. With everyone participating and creating a lot of different stuffs, there could be a possibility of too much information, in which one cannot handle. Another could be the originality or copyright issues, there could be a chance that someone from somewhere has the same idea as you, or even a bit similar. So saying that something is yours could be hard if it gets too wide.
Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still yearn for stronger community?
-It really depends on the person, some people love or enjoy knowing everybody around him/her while others would just rather stick with their friends. Well, with the world today, it's better if you know a lot of people, or you have a lot of connections, having such will give you more opportunities in life. If you stick to the people you only know, you'll have a limit.
Do media mediate human relation?
Yes and No, because media can be a source of information of various kinds. Media may imply that resolving conflicts such as racial discrimination. Yes, it can resolve human relations when it is used properly and with purpose. And No, if it is used for aggravating people’s emotions through offensive actions or words.

What is the impact of participatory culture? Are there any dangers?
Its impact on today's culture would be classified as the over reliance of certain individuals to the information they retrieve from the source. Another one would be the low levels of an individuals integrity since online participatory cultures rarely meet.
Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still yearn for stronger community?
Probably yes. Since we are now all living in the technology age, even the group find themselves hard to resist the use of google or any other search engines when it comes to researching or just simply looking at things over the internet.
Do media mediate human relation?
Yes, in a way that the sources of information need not you to be in the same place it is happening but it is now easily accessible anytime and anywhere as long as there is a source of information nearby.

What is the impact of participatory culture? Are there any dangers?
There are millions of people who are active on the internet. They share and view all kinds of information. With participatory culture, anyone can share information, even if this information is irrelevant. This causes a "waste" in the capacity of information that can be handled by servers. Also, there is no assurance that an individual who shares information is credible to that information, or if he has gotten it from another source. Lastly, there is no control on the information being shared over the internet. Anyone can post just about anything, even if it has bad influences to one's culture.
Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still yearn for stronger community?
Yes, it is always good for people to create strong bonds among other people. Having these bonds especially in a certain community helps us to move forward with our lives especially with the friends we have or yet to make. And with the use of the different SNS, even people who are virtually present can become a special friend, and these online friends can be a strong community in the virtual world.
Do social media mediate people?
There are times that media do mediate human relations, since in media, both sides can be heard through what they say. An example of this is whenever there are disputes between countries, the media looks at both sides. However, since media's contents are not really limited, there are some information that either intensifies disputes or starts it.
1. What is the impact of participatory culture? Are there any dangers?
Participatory culture helps build stronger communication among people in the online community. Ideas and information can also spread fast that may contribute for creating and sharing one's creations. Particiatory culture also helps the members believe that their contributions matter and in this way they feel a degree of connection. Dangers in participatory include participation gap where in there is unequal access to opportunities, experiences skills, andknowledge that will prepare youth for full participation in the world of tomorrow; transparency problem is an issue where in the people do not realize how media shapes the perceptions of the world and ethics challenge is disregarding the rules and disciplines but just completely engaging and contributing.
2. Will your generation, given independence, still yearn for a stronger community?
It actually depends on how a person views a stronger community. A stronger community for us is a community that is productive, a community that builds more networks and relationships. Since technology is now a necessity, it should open the minds of the people to use technology to share ideas to others that can be a root for development of emerging technologies. Opinions and insights should always be welcome as well as thinking out of the box when considering statements read.
3. Is media really mediating human relations?
Media carries the message that people want to be heard. Media creates relationships, and also at times severs ties in relationships and networks. Since humans have different perceptions, media has limits that people should consider. Media is just a tool that people can use, but it cannot convey the message fully.

1. What is the impact of a participatory culture? Are there any dangers?
Participatory culture has transformed the way we live and interact with information today. No longer do we need to rely on media, books for knowledge. Instead, we create the knowledge. It comes from us. Slowly but surely, participatory culture has begun to shape our world, our generation. In this day and age where technology is becoming the primary facilitator/mediator/enabler of sharing, it is we who are tasked to manage and utilize properly this “power.”
The only danger this could pose is the “validity” and “accuracy” of information. In this current Twitter generation of ours, everything has become so instant: Instant updates; instant gossip; instant rumors. This “instant” mentality we are having makes room for rumors, rumors and even more rumors. It has come to the point that some reports have no basis whatsoever. It is important that we are able to filter and continue to present reliable information for everyone.
2. Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, still yearn for stronger community?
Community is something we will always yearn for. As individuals, we aim to create “bonds.” We exist to create these bonds with others. This is the essence of sociability and interaction. At the end of the day, despite all these dependencies, we must remember that we still aim/strive/look for connections online. We want to find similar people. People who have same interests, likes, dislikes, etc.... That is why communities will never really disappear. Rather they continue to evolve into something dynamic and flexible: Virtual Communities. These virtual communities have now become the norm in a world that is constantly changing and evolving.
3. Do the media mediate human relations?
The media will always have a role in mediating human relations. As long as there is information to be disseminated, the media will continue to be an integral part of that information sharing process. Their knowledge and technology, and broad range of connections and coverage instantly make them the forefront of innovation and change. In essence, they are the ones that provide that needed spark for watchers, readers and viewers in order to be aware of these new technologies and ideas.

-What is the impact of participatory culture? are there any dangers?
Participatory culture is when people do not act as consumers only but also as contributors.
Based on the video “An anthropological introduction to YouTube,” it shows how videos are uploaded
by ordinary people on youtube and it gets viewed by millions of people all over the world even though
it was intended to be viewed by less than 100 users. Because of this, information can be
easily disseminated although there are dangers as to having access to every information available in
the internet becasue instances of copyright infringement could take place. people can contribute
unecessary information or content that are not suitable for the viewers especially the minors.
-Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still yearn for stronger community?
Yes, because it promotes globalization. Connecting or communicating with other people around the
world will not be impossible. Becasue of communication, there would be more ideas and developments.
It will be easy to find someone over the internet by just searching for its name thus, it helps to
build relationships and make it last.
-Do media mediate human relation?
Media can mediate human relation for it is an insturment of communication.
Because of this, both sides of the story can be heard to avoid misunderstandings.
Also, today, media is accessible anytime with the help of the internet.

What is the impact of participatory culture? Are there any dangers?
In the film, we saw that people are not the only ones that are getting connected; even different technologies are somehow interconnected which makes the flow of information that much faster. There are now a number of sites where you can find the most viewed, most commented, most anything of everything in the web. In our generation, information, even the most mundane, can not only be easily reached but also offered. There are lots of avenues where people can share their opinions, views or in this case videos and these things may be able to reach a lot of people. Current technology does not only bring information closer to people, it brings people closer to information and each other. It not only distributes information but encourages people to share in the topics presented. However, participatory culture may bring about dangers, most noticeably in privacy. A lot of people would post their videos that might not be meant for the eyes of others. Because of the ease of accessing information, there’s no telling how a single home video can end up in. Participatory culture also allows you to see a glimpse of the other people and also share a piece of yourself in return. However, with the mask of technology, one can never be sure about how authentic the other person is. This may pose some serious privacy issues especially since you never know just how much the person knows about you.
Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still
yearn for stronger community?
For our group, we think it is a yes. According to the film, new technologies nowadays promoted individualism, independence and commercialization. Thus, we can see that it is gradually changing the activities humans are used in doing. For instance, as new dependencies on technology promote individualism, real and person-person communities are gradually disappearing, but a new form of community is being formed online. For us, although new communities online are being formed, it will still be different because relating and communicating online only depends on technology, and humans in this sense is living in a different type of world wherein he does not anymore know his/her true self, thus being inauthentic with himself and thus promoting an inauthentic type of community. We think there will always be a longing for this strong community, by strong community we mean is a community wherein people do not only depend on technology to be able to reach and relate with each other. For our group, a strong community is an authentic community where people perceive each other through human senses without the help of dependencies in terms of technologies, and where humans act without dropping any weaknesses and knowing their authentic selves. This type of community will always promote better and real relationships.
Do media mediate human relation?
In a way yes, even in our offline relationships we have come to depend on different media in order to connect with each other. Media is changing the way we view our relationships. In this time, “meeting someone online” is no longer something that is surprising or even rare. Relationships now do not just generally mean meeting someone face to face but it could also mean meeting someone through networks. It can be seen through the fact that people could now form communities online. We are now not just limited to communities we form through our day to day activities but we can join communities through our various interests. Without media, our view of human relations would still be limited. We believe that that we can form human relations through various media and in that way we are able to form wider connections.

What is the impact of participatory culture? Are there any dangers?
Participatory culture has transformed ordinary people from passive to active in advocating their views on various issues and they’re being heard. It has leveled the playing field where it’s not like in the past in which only the media, companies, and other major organizations are the only ones we hear from and thus, shaping how we think. Now, everyone can produce information and it is readily available to all. The biggest danger that the group sees is that with all these information presented to us, we need to be able to discern which ones are facts and which ones are only opinions. As a result, information is judged solely on its persuasiveness and what the majority says it to be which also has a possibility to be false information.
Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still yearn for stronger community?
Yes because our age emphasizes technology more than the community. Thus, less time is actually being devoted to enriching human interaction the traditional way, that is, without any technological medium like the cellphone and Facebook. We then find ourselves feeling disconnected but connected at the same time. Disconnected because communication is constrained within the parameters of the medium being used, and on the other hand, connected because we can easily get in touch with people that would otherwise be impossible physically.
Do media mediate human relation?
YES and NO. New forms of media have emerged through time. With this, human interactions have increased. Information that is not readily available before can be now be accessed in no time at all. However, with the emergence of new forms of media, the effects may vary especially in mediating human relations. In some circumstances, media can be seen as an arbitrator of human relationship. It can create new connections across the world. Other than this, it may also create conflicts among the people in a network. It really depends on how the people use media to maximize its advantages.

What is the impact of participatory culture? are there any dangers?
From what we think, participatory culture does not really rely on the different kinds of media. Nowadays we, the users/participants, are the ones who contribute to the said culture. We are also the ones who benefit from what we contribute because it is where we get updated to the current trends present in the community.
Yes, there can be dangers, sometimes we will not notice that the information we share could be private. Sharing of private information could do harm to users and could affect their privacy. There can be instances that a user can be tracked by another user because of the information he/she gives to the public.
Will our generation, even with all the dependencies, do you still yearn for stronger community?
Of course, who would not like improvement despite the advancements we have today. We think that there are still areas in the community that could be made stronger. But we are not saying that strong communities only rely on interactions made online. It is just that these kinds of technologies are the ones that make it easier for the people of the community to participate in certain events that is happening online. It is not that we are not contented in our community today; we are just expecting that there could be still improvements that could be done.
Do media mediate human relation?
Yes, it is obvious that media affects human relations. Most of the topics today discussed by groups of people involve media. For example, a video shared by people away from each other could have the bonding through watching the video. There are instances that people have their own worlds when sharing a common interest through the media. What we are saying is that media really has changed the way people interact with each other. Sometimes it could lead to the betterment of the community but there are also instances that it could harm or abuse the people of the community.

Does Media Mediate Human Behavior
-When you hear the word media, it doesn't necessary relate to the "media" we see in T.V.'s or the internet. Newspapers can also be considered media. Media would be similar to the word medium or mediate. We can say that media is the medium in which information is delivered. Do media mediate human behavior? Human behavior can be influenced by multiple factors. I believe that the greatest factor that influences human behavior would be information since people react to the information they receive either consciously or unconsciously. Consciously, the person may actively react to the information he received or passively, the information may haunt the person in his sleep.
-Media could also reflect human behavior since if you analyze what the person delivered in the media, you can analyze a part of his behavior. For example in this form of media he presents a negative image of this certain race and does not present any positive traits of that race. We can say that the producer of that media may be racist and may harbor a certain hatred to that people and presents aggression to them in his behavior.
Impact of Participatory Culture?Dangesrs?
-An example of participatory culture is World of Warcraft. We see people participating in that game and form communities online. They would have their own culture in their communities as if an independent nation. There are times when the people in the online community meet in person but mostly, some only meet online. Even if they only meet online, they could also collaborate in things not related to the game, since its an online community. An example would be helping a friend from the game with his programming assignment. Other participatory cultures need not be online as long as there is an activity that people indulge in and people are connected by that activity. Dangers would depend on what kind of activity is it. For World Of Warcraft, its an online game you play in your PC. Since you can have your own community there, you can interact with multiple people even without leaving your room. The danger would be not leaving your room for months because of the game or your social interaction would solely be limited to online interactions giving the person difficulty to socialize with real people in person. Participatory culture can also be viewed as good but is actually wrong. Overly liberal people and conservative people would always clash. If many people participate in a certain activity, then it is considered ok and not as bad. People here in the past carried more values and were better natured as compared today due to the “Liberal” culture the west presents. People were more proper before but not anymore and since many participate in that culture, it is considered normal. For this specific culture, the danger is the dissipation of values.
Group of Mangulabnan, Gonzales, Marquez-Lim, Go, Lee Part2
Does this generation yearn for an authentic community?
-The meaning of “this generation” is not absolute, it is relative depending on the place and culture of what generation you consider. Filipinos are relational people, meaning Filipinos always tend to relate themselves to others. There would always exist a community, and most of those would be authentic as well. People in the west would be more individualistic. They focus with the individual and not part of a whole. When you’re a usually viewer of youtube, you can see that most of the videos are not entertainment shows you see on T.V. Some videos would only contain someone speaking about a certain topic then you see replies to that video in a form of another video of a person speaking. Some users even collaborate in making a video without even meeting in person. They form friends online, they form communities online. There are even some users who exert alot of effort to produce a video for their “fans”, multiple people that may be considered a community. With this desire we can say that these people yearn for a community. Commenting or criticizing ones work seriously takes conviction. Collaboration with another to form a good video shows your sincerity. This is authentic in a way. I can say that those selected people yearn for an authentic community.
* Do you agree that new media is mediating human relations?
- In a way, yes it mediates human relations. Through the different media such as video phones, the web/internet, VOIP capable gadgets and the like, people gets more "reachable". Communication between people in different places can now be easily established. For most people including ourselves, the use of new media is due to the "emotional benefits" that they get. Like for those who have family members abroad, online chat, MSN for example, is very much useful in "getting in touch" and keeping each other updated about their personal experiences and the like. In addition, the availability of communication softwares such as YM allows the users to "talk" to many different people, all at the same time. This is very much useful for the "workaholics" and people with busy schedules since they have very limited time for "catching up" with their friends and families.
*Do you agree that there is still a need for a community?
We believe that a community is necessary for professionals that are mainly interested in knowledge sharing or creative content sharing but not really necesary for "personal relationships". A community will also be helpful and effective in promoting social advocacies. - BY: Agustin, Bernardez, Panopio, Rodriguez - SOCCOMP S14
QUESTIONS:
1.Does the new media really mediate human relations?
2.Impact of participatory cultures? What are the dangers?
3.Does your generation still yearn for stronger community; authenticity in your community?
ANSWERS:
1. Yes,new media can mediate human relations.Because of the presence of internet and other technological devices like computers and cellphones, it has been easier for us to make connections with other people in the same way that information is just a click away.Technological devices that gives us access to the internet makes human relations profound, we can easily find people even those we haven't been in touch with for quite some time already. Also, our connections extends to becoming friends, as what we categorized it in some social networking sites, with people whom we never met in real life.due to the presence of what we call new media, people who shares the same interests can easily group together and become friends. Just like in the case of the Numa Numa Guy, even some people may not take interest to what he was doing and find him weird he was able to create a connection with other people who appreciates the same thing as he does, they created their own versions of the dance. new media, allows us to express ourselves without the fear of not fitting in and setting in our own trend.
2. Participatory culture will become the most visible since elements of culture arguably include more esoteric factors that quantifiable ones. Nowadays, with the technology around, participatory culture have been always practiced. With youtube, people can be able to post or publish their own media and become producers of their own film, art etc. I believe that participatory culture is good for us for it inspires people to be more creative, responsive as well as to exxpress themselves. Also, participatory culture helps in voicing out the feelings of people about matters in the society which could greatly affect the way we live. I believe that there is nothing wrong with it but sometimes posting or publishling media should be controlled and some people often abuse it. There is nothing wrong in taking part of this new culture, users should just be more careful with the information they are publisizing. Moreover, despite the freedom we get with regards to saying our feelings and comments on certain issues we should still be careful with what we say or do because we might do something that could aggreviate anger from other groups of people or individuals who does not share the same beliefs as we do.
3. Yes. No one wouldnt wish for a stronger and authentic community. With our generation, authenticity in the community specially online is hard to establish and see. Some people we meet through this new media or new forms of internet social sites are people we haven't met in real life hence it posses a danger that some people may trick or make us of this anonimity to harm other people. Users just have to be more careful. I believe that this generation is much more connected and stronger than before for new communication options. We just wish that with this stronger community, authenticity is not sacrificed.
